UCI Move-In Day Survival Guide 🎓
Move-in day at UC Irvine is a lot smoother once you know what is actually provided in your room, what UCI wants you to leave at home, and how parking and Wi-Fi setup actually work. Here is what to know before you load the car, written for students and the parents helping them move.
When You Will Get Your Exact Move-In Time
UCI does not use one single move-in day for every student. Your Housing Assignment email includes your specific date, arrival time window, and check-in location, along with parking instructions for that day. Keep an eye on your UCI email in the weeks before the term starts, since this is the only place the real details show up.
What Is Already in Your Room
Furnished rooms already include an extra-long twin bed and mattress (38 by 80 inches), a mattress cover, a desk with chair, and a wardrobe. That single detail changes your entire packing list: standard twin sheets will not fit an XL twin mattress, so double-check the label before you buy bedding.
Parking on Move-In Day
Parking is complimentary on your assigned move-in date, but loading zones have a strict 20-minute limit, so unload, then move your car right away. If you plan to keep a car overnight, you will need an overnight permit purchased at a dispenser or kiosk. Outside of move-in weekend, resident parking permits are required, and freshmen bringing a car should budget for a quarterly parking permit on top of tuition.
Most first-year students skip the car entirely and rely on the Anteater Express shuttle, the discounted OCTA University Pass, bikeUCI, or Zipcar rentals for the occasional need. It is worth trying campus without a car for a quarter before committing to a permit.
Getting Wi-Fi Working the Same Day
Every undergraduate community has Wi-Fi installed, and getting connected takes about two minutes. Connect your device to the ResNet Mobile Access network, open a browser, and you should be redirected automatically to Express Registration. Sign in with your UCInetID, wait a couple of minutes, and you are online. If it does not redirect automatically, go to Express Registration directly.
What to Do With All the Cardboard
UCI runs a genuine living-green program during move-in, and it is worth following. Break down and flatten every box instead of leaving it whole, then take it to the designated recycling area outside your hall. Pack reusable containers and a water bottle since refill stations are in every hall, and use the composting bin already provided in your kitchen. It sounds minor, but move-in week generates a real amount of cardboard across thousands of students, and flattened boxes take a fraction of the space.
💡 A Note for Parents
Move-in day usually means your student’s old bedroom quietly turns into storage for furniture, electronics, and clothes they outgrew years ago. When you are ready to clear that space out, residential junk removal can handle it in a single visit, same-day or next-day, across University Park, Turtle Rock, Woodbury, and the rest of Irvine. Call (949) 556-3600 for a free flat-rate quote whenever you are ready.
