Things Waste Management Won’t Pick Up in Irvine 🚫
Irvine’s curbside bulky pickup covers a lot, but not everything. Here’s what gets left behind, and how to get rid of it anyway.

How Irvine’s Bulky Item Pickup Actually Works
Waste Management handles curbside trash for Irvine, and residents get two free bulky item pickups per calendar year, up to four items per pickup (Great Park Neighborhoods residents get four pickups a year). It covers the basics well: furniture, appliances, and mattresses. But it has real limits, and once you’re past those limits or dealing with excluded items, the city truck simply won’t take it.
🚫 What Won’t Get Picked Up
- Construction and renovation debris: drywall, lumber, tile, and similar material from a remodel isn’t accepted as a bulky item.
- Tires: not accepted through curbside collection at all.
- Household hazardous waste: paint, oil, chemicals, and similar items have to go to a dedicated Household Hazardous Waste facility, not the curb.
- Electronics in regular trash: e-waste is only covered through the separate bulky item pickup process, not tossed in your cart, and needs to be scheduled specifically.
- Refrigerators and AC units without proper refrigerant removal: these need the refrigerant removed and certified by a technician first, or they won’t be collected.
- More than four items per pickup: anything beyond that counts as an additional pickup, and you only get two free ones a year.
🤔 So What Do You Do With It Instead?
This is exactly the gap a junk removal service fills. We take construction debris, handle refrigerant recovery properly on appliances, and don’t cap you at four items or two pickups a year. For hazardous waste specifically, that still needs to go through Irvine’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, that’s not something a junk removal crew can legally take either.

FAQ 🤔
How many free bulky pickups does Irvine give residents? 📋
Two per calendar year, up to four items each, through Waste Management. Great Park Neighborhoods residents get four pickups a year.
Will the city take construction debris? 🧱
No, construction and renovation debris isn’t accepted as a bulky item. See our construction debris removal page for how we handle it instead.
What happens if I have more than four items? 📦
Extra items count as an additional bulky pickup, and you’re limited to two free pickups per year. A junk removal service doesn’t have that cap.
Can I put an old refrigerator out for bulky pickup? 🧊
Only if the refrigerant has already been removed by a certified technician. See our appliance removal page for how we handle this properly.
Where does household hazardous waste go? ⚠️
Irvine’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, not the curb and not a junk removal pickup. That material needs specialized handling either way.
Is there a free junk removal option in Irvine?
Irvine residents get two free bulky pickups a year through Waste Management, but with real limits on item count, type, and how often you can use it. We’re the option once you’re past those limits or dealing with excluded items.
