Post-Holiday Cleanup Guide for Irvine, CA 🎄
The decorations come down and the boxes pile up fast. Here’s what Irvine’s free tree recycling actually covers, and what to do with everything else.

Christmas Tree Recycling in Irvine: What’s Actually Free
Waste Management collects real Christmas trees curbside at no charge for about three weeks after Christmas, on your regular collection day. Trees taller than 4 to 6 feet need to be cut in half, and all decorations, lights, ornaments, tinsel, and the tree stand, need to come off first. Flocked trees are collected but not recycled the same way. If you’re outside the collection window or don’t have curbside service, Sunset Environmental Transfer Station in Irvine takes trees for free with proof of Irvine residency. Call Waste Management at (949) 642-1191 for exact dates each year, since the window shifts slightly.
📦 What the Tree Program Doesn’t Cover
The free program is specifically for real trees, not everything else the holidays leave behind. That includes the flood of cardboard boxes and packaging from gifts, broken or outdated decorations, wrapping paper beyond what fits in your regular bin, and old items you’re replacing with new ones you unwrapped, an old TV once the new one is set up, old furniture once a new piece arrives, or last year’s appliance once its replacement is installed.
🚛 Where We Come In
We handle everything outside the free tree program: excess boxes and packaging, old electronics and appliances replaced by gifts, broken decorations, and general post-holiday clutter that built up over the season. If you’re also dealing with an artificial tree you’re replacing, that’s something we can take too, since it isn’t part of the curbside recycling program at all.
⚡ Same-Day Cleanup After the Holidays
January is one of our busier months for exactly this reason. Most requests placed before 10 AM on a weekday can still get a same-day pickup window. See our full same-day service page for details.
♻️ Where Your Items Go
Working electronics and furniture in good condition go to donation centers first. Appliances and electronics go through proper recycling and, where required, refrigerant recovery. Only what genuinely can’t be donated or recycled ends up disposed of.
Our Guarantee 🤝
We stand behind our work. If we miss anything from your confirmed job, call us within 24 hours and we’ll come back to make it right — no extra charge, no hassle.

Post-Holiday Cleanup FAQ 🤔
Is Christmas tree pickup really free in Irvine? 🎄
Yes, Waste Management collects real trees curbside at no charge for about three weeks after Christmas on your regular collection day. Decorations must be removed first.
Can I put an artificial tree out with the real trees? ❄️
No, the free curbside program is for real trees only. Artificial trees aren’t part of that collection and need a different disposal route, which is something we can help with.
What do I do with all the extra cardboard boxes? 📦
If it exceeds your regular recycling bin capacity, we can haul away the overflow along with anything else from the season.
Can you take the old TV or furniture we replaced? 📺
Yes, this is one of our most common January requests. See our appliance and furniture removal page for details.
