Holiday Prep Cleanouts in Irvine: What to Clear Before Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is four weeks out, and if you’re hosting this year, your guests will notice the clutter long before they notice the turkey. The garage that hasn’t fit a car since spring. The guest room that’s become a storage unit. The patio buried under a season of yard debris.
Late October is the sweet spot to deal with it: close enough to the holidays that you know what’s coming, early enough that haulers, donation pickups, and your own trash service still have open slots. Here’s how to clear the decks before the holiday rush hits Irvine.
Start with the rooms your guests will actually see
The garage. In most Irvine homes the garage is the default overflow zone — holiday decorations, old paint cans, broken tools, the boxes you never unpacked. Your own Halloween and Christmas bins need to come out of storage soon, which means the dead weight has to go first. (Our garage cleanout crews handle exactly this: sorting, hauling, and leaving the space swept — most garage cleanouts run $200–$450 depending on how packed it is.)
The guest room. That spare mattress, the dresser with the broken drawer, the treadmill that’s been a clothes rack since 2023 — if a relative is sleeping in that room on November 26, it needs to read as a bedroom, not a warehouse.
The patio and yard. Fallen branches, dead landscaping, the patio furniture set you meant to replace in July. First impressions start at the front door.
The “being replaced” pile. Holiday sales are when big-ticket items get swapped: a new couch delivered means the old one needs to leave before the delivery truck arrives, not after. Same for mattresses and TVs — and old electronics need proper e-waste recycling under California rules, not a curb pile.
Irvine timing traps to plan around
A few local realities that catch people every November:
Trash day slides on Thanksgiving week. Waste Management doesn’t run collection routes on Thanksgiving Day, so if Thursday is your pickup day, expect the week’s pickups to shift a day. Don’t plan a curb-side purge for that week — and if your bins are already overflowing from pre-holiday cleaning, that’s a sign the overflow needs a hauler, not a bin.
Curbside bulky pickup needs an appointment. Irvine residents get four free bulk-item collections a year through WM — but they’re scheduled pickups, not on-demand. Around the holidays those slots fill up. Call WM at (949) 642-1191 well ahead, or skip the wait entirely with a same-day crew.
Paints and chemicals need a separate trip. We can’t haul hazardous materials — chemicals, paints, asbestos, or fuel — and neither will your curbside service. Orange County’s household hazardous waste center at 6411 Oak Canyon in Irvine takes them free, Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (closed on major holidays). Pull those items aside early so they don’t stall the rest of your cleanout.
Check your HOA’s decoration rules. Many Irvine associations set windows for when holiday decorations can go up and when they must come down. Clearing the garage now gives you somewhere to stage the bins — and somewhere to put them back in January.
Gated village? Arrange access ahead. If you’re in a gated community like Woodbury or one of the Great Park neighborhoods, have the gate pass or code ready for your crew. A hauler stuck at the gate burns the time window you booked.
Why not just do a dump run yourself?
You can — but Thanksgiving week is the worst week for it. Transfer stations and landfills run holiday hours, the nearest public options charge by vehicle size, and you’ll burn half a day loading, driving, unloading, and driving back. (Note: the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill near Irvine is commercial disposal only — household self-haul needs to go elsewhere.)
A crew does in an hour what costs you a Saturday, and there’s no second trip when the couch doesn’t fit in the SUV.
How booking a cleanout works
